Rotational grazing is a significant component of how we raise healthy goats. Intensive grazing and confinement programs should be a thing of the past. By rotating pastures, you can improve the quality of your pastures, lower your parasite loads, and can increase your acreage-to-livestock ratio.
What this looks like for us, is ten acres of pasture divided into 7 sections of pasture and three 'sacrifice' paddocks. The goats are only allowed in one section for five days at a time before they are moved to the next. This prevents the forage from being eaten down too low, increasing the likelihood of the animal picking up parasites. We also do not need to grain our goats! This provides the consumer with high-quality grass-fed meat.
We keep 100 goats using this system and still have room to expand our operation. For more details please see the "Goat Raising Tips" page.
Crops
When it comes to raising crops, we are a pesticide-free farm. We use no-till farming practices and are looking into expanding to hydroponic systems in the future. Our goal is to neutralize our farm's footprint and create a balance between us and the ecosystems on our land. A big step we have taken towards doing this is planting and encouraging native plant species to grow in unused spaces. We want to make sure our pollinators keep coming to help our food grow!
